Hello and Welcome to The Occasional Reader

Welcome to The Occasional Reader.  My name is Marc Rubin and I live in Monroe Ohio.  I am a curious reader.  History, science, novels - all I ask is that the writer open my eyes to a new idea, experience, frame of reference.  One section of my bookshelf is devoted to books that caught my attention and held me to the very end.

I decided to start this blog as an homage to a Time Life book club that I joined 30 years ago.  Not the usual Time Life book club, built around a how-to theme with a new picture book every other month.  This was a "trust us" book club with no theme at all.  Every two months, two books arrived in the mail.  Books that were the personal favorites of someone who worked at Time Life Books.  Different types of books every time - and almost always books that I had never heard of (but should have).  It was fun and some of my favorite books came from that series.

Car Accident and Work Injury

It is very important to get yourself diagnosed as soon as possible if you have been in an auto accident, no matter how minor it may have seemed at the time, or have sustained an injury on the job. At first, you may feel ok only later to develop neck pain, back pain, stiffness, headaches, sleeping problems, fatigue, weakness, memory problems, blurry vision, and ringing in ears due to soft tissue and spinal injuries, which could take up to weeks, months, or even years!
Your symptoms and pain may become worse over time without proper care and eventually become completely debilitating preventing even normal daily activities. Gentle chiropractic care without risky surgery or dangerous drugs, which can mask symptoms, can help with pain relief, increase mobility and nerve function, improve strength and stability, improve range of motion, and improve body mechanics. Essentially, chiropractic care can help give you your life back and improve your overall health!

Chiropractic Explained

CHIROPRACTIC 101

1. God put the most powerful healing force in our Brain and Spinal Cord (our Nervous System) and as long as that healing power can flow clearly from the brain to body, optimal Health and healing is experienced!

2. God surrounded that Brain and Spinal Cord with a bony encasement called the skull and vertebrae.

3. The vertebral subluxation (spinal vertebrae "pinching" the spinal cord or nerves) blocks the life-giving source of all Health and function.

4. The vertebral subluxation is the cause of sickness, dysfunction and all dis-ease.

5. The chiropractic adjustment corrects vertebral subluxation, thus the cause of all dis-ease.

6. Chiropractic begins with and works with the source of life within the body (Innate Intelligence/Healing Force) and restores Health by restoring the flow of source within man; adding nothing, subtracting nothing to or from the human body, to make it well.

Invisible Fences – the Perfect Solution?

The volunteers at C&C have recently been coming across dogs leaving the confines of their electric fences. While these containment systems are becoming quite popular, we thought we should let prospective buyers (and current owners) know the hidden dangers.

Invisible-type fences work by utilizing an electronic collar kept around your pet’s neck which reads impulses from underground wires or radiowave units. When your pet gets near the border of your yard, the computer generates a signal causing a small electro shock or stimulation to surprise your pet and scare them away from the boundary, therefore keeping them within the confines of your yard.

What You Don't Feel Can Hurt You

Anyone who’s seen the movie Titanic knows what can happen when we blindly forge ahead, unaware of dangers lurking beneath the surface. Hundreds of innocent lives were lost, because the priority was getting ahead quickly, instead of being fully aware of the environment. Warnings were missed and disaster struck.

How often this happens with our bodies as well. We’ve been taught to just focus on symptoms to determine whether we’re “sick” or “healthy”. Yet, by the time symptoms show up the ship’s already sinking. If you wait for a cavity to have a symptom, your tooth is already pretty rotten. In a large percentage of cases the first symptom of a heart condition is a fatal heart attack. By the time cancer becomes symptomatic it’s been developing for years and has caused major damage to the body. The list of diseases and illnesses which only become symptomatic in their later or end stages is long. Do we really want to wait that long?

Stray Animals on the Rise in Monroe

Spring is here and the volunteers with Catnip & Carrots Animal Bunch have seen an increased number of strays running loose in Monroe. Sadly, these animals are NOT wearing tags or collars! Whether on main thoroughfares like Route 63 or lost in your neighborhood, these innocent animals are scared, stopping traffic and oblivious to the dangers they are causing residents and drivers. And should you try and catch a stray pet and be bitten or scratched? That good deed could lead to painful and lengthy rabies treatments.
