Monroe Current Events Club

Monroe Current Events Club held the November 7, 2007 meeting at the James Monroe Room of the City Building. Lovely fall flowers graced the tables. Pumpkin pie, nuts, mints, and drinks were served. The hostesses were: Elaine Blount, Ann Blose, and Pat Bell. Following the theme for the year, Outstanding Women, Joyce Krebs gave an interesting report on Madeleine Korbel Albright. Madeleine Albright was nominated by President Clinton on December 5, 1996 as Secretary of State. She was sworn in as the 64th Secretary of State on January 23, 1997.

Secretary Albright was the first female secretary of state and the highest ranking woman in the history of the U. S. government. She was born in Prague in 1937 and her family came to the United States when she was eleven. She became a citizen in 1957. She earned a B.A. from Wellesley, studied at Johns Hopkins and received her Masters and PhD. from Columbia University. She has received honorary doctorates from several universities. Prior to her appointment as Secretary of State, she was the U. S. representative to the United Nations. She currently is a Professor at Georgetown University and the chairperson of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs.

Secretary Albright is fluent in English, French, Russian and Czech, with good speaking and reading abilities in Russian, Polish, German, and Serb-Croatian.Peggy Hesson, President, announced the details about the next meeting. The Christmas Luncheon will be held at noon, December 5, 2007 at the Shaker Run Clubhouse. The Executive Committee will be the hostesses.
