Four years ago a number of Coach John Caudy’s eighth grade students asked him to help them form a bowling team, but there was no sanctioned play at the time. Nationally, bowling has become the fastest growing participation sport during the last few years.
After bowling became a sanctioned sport in Ohio last year, Coach John Caudy received permission to start a team. Initially he was hoping to gather enough students for a Coed Varisty team. He put out a signup sheet for interested students and hoped for the best.
Fifty five students signed up for the team – and after tryouts and cuts – Caudy ended up with four teams! With a Varsity and JV team for both boys and girls, bowling is drawing many new athletes who do not participate in any other school sports.
The students have been practicing at Eastern Lanes in Middletown several times a week and attending tournaments. Generally two complete games and two to six “Baker” games are played. A Baker game is played with five players on a team, each bowling two frames for a total game score. There is no handicap in league play.
Five of the students have averaged over 180 in tournament play, and Junior Cameron Day has a 206 average. All the students are improving their scores weekly.
