Current Events Club Feburary Meeting

Monroe Current Events Club met February 6, 2008 in the James Monroe Room of the Municipal Building. The serving table was decorated in red and white and had a lovely floral centerpiece of red and white carnations. The round tables were decorated with valentines and a vase of red roses. A delicious cherry cheesecake was served with candy, nuts, and beverages. The hostesses for the day were: Imogene Orts, Mary Maurer, and Dorcas Weidner.
Following the theme of Outstanding Women, Gloria Miltenberger gave the program on Victoria Claflin Woodhull.
Victoria was born in Homer, Ohio in 1838. She was an American suffragist, who became a leader in the movement for women's rights and labor reforms. She was definitely a lady who was ahead of her times.
At 15 she married Canning Woodhull, a doctor, who was an alcoholic and womanizer. She found that she would have to support the family financially.
She and her sister, Tennessee were the first female brokers on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1870, she and her sister established a paper "Woodhull & Claflin's Weekly". The paper advocated, among other things, women' s suffrage, short skirts, spiritualism, free love, vegetarianism and licensed prostitution. She is probably best known for the fact that she was nominated for President of the United States by the Equal Rights Party in 1872. Her name never appeared on the ballot for several reasons, one of which was the fact she was not 35. In October 1876, Victoria divorced her second husband, Colonel Blood, and moved to England to start a new life. There she met John Biddulph Martin, who would become her third husband. She died in 1927 in England.
Her radical ideas led her opponents to dub her "Wicked Woodhull."
Ann Blose brought the books which we purchased for the Monroe City Schools Media Center, for members to see.
The next meeting will be March 5, 2008 at the James Monroe Room of the Municipal Building.
