April Current Events Club Meeting

The Monroe Current Events Club held the April 2, 2008 meeting at the Monroe Community Room of the Municipal Building. The tea table was decorated with a beautiful bouquet of lilies and the round tables held small pansy plants. Hostesses for the day were Charlotte Woodson, Ruth McDiffett and Mary Jane Conrad.
Continuing the Theme of Oustanding Women, Pat Bell gave the program on Judith Resnik, NASA Astronaut.
Judith was born in Akron, Ohio, April 5, 1949. She graduated from Firestone High School, in Akron.In 1970 she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University, and in 1977 a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland. She was a classical pianist, and enjoyed bicycling, running and flying in her free time.
She was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in January 1978. Dr. Resnick worked on a number of projects in support of Orbiter development. Dr. Resnik first flew as a mission specialist on the Orbiter Discovery, August 30, 1984. During this 7 day mission the crew completed experiments and deployed three satellites.
Dr. Resnik was a mission specialist on the Orbiter Challanger. She and the crew died when the Challenger exploded after launch, January 28, 1986. She was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
During the business meeting, Pat Beatty reported the new slate of officers for 2008-2009, They are as follows: Charlotte Woodson--President, Randy Rolich--Vice-President, Joan Bailey--Secretary,Joyce Krebs--Assistant Secretary, and Imogene Orts--Treasurer.
The next meeting will be May 7 at 1 p.m. at the Monroe Community Room.
