Historical Society Book Signing
The Monroe Historical Society has announced they will host a book signing for Monroe resident turned author, Marcia McCartt on Sunday, March 8 from 2:00-4:00pm at the Historical Society located at 10 East Elm Street in Monroe The 128-page book traces the history of Monroe from 1850 with over 200 black-and-white photos with a historical narrative
Mrs. McCartt’s passion for history and genealogy combined with an interest in the community encouraged her to write her first book She began with an interest in writing about the tornado that destroyed much of Monroe From that, her interest began to develop in exploring much earlier events of this 192 year-old community In addition to the 1969 tornado, the book features information about Nathaniel Sackett, the city’s founder, the Monroe churches and schools, the many community events celebrated by the residents, and successful individuals coming from the community
Most of the photos depicting the history came from members of the Monroe Historical Society or from the private collections of Monroe families In addition to the book signing, the Monroe Historical Society will feature an exhibit on Monroe history, with several photos of early Monroe, a display featuring dress of the time, an array of small farm tools honoring the agricultural history of the community, and a Paragon Plow manufactured in Monroe signifying the history of many business developments
The Monroe Historical Society is one of the outlets where Mrs. McCartt’s book can be purchased The book is available for $21.99 with part of the proceeds going to the Historical Society The books will be available to purchase the day of the signing For more information or to purchase a book, please contact the Historical Society at 538-2270.
