The Monroe Historical Society is sponsoring a day of old-fashioned baseball, fun and activities for all ages. The 1869 Red Stockings, based in Cincinnati, will be playing a Monroe team coached by Councilman Tracy Shell. The game will be played using 1869 rules (baseball rules have evolved a quite a bit over time). Period uniforms have been provided for the Golden Lads by Mark Bursley of the Red Onion Cafe.

The festivities begin at 11:00 a.m. The log cabin will be open for visitors, and the Red Onion will be serving baseball fare (popcorn, peanuts, pulled pork sandwiches, hotdogs, brats and salt-water taffy). Catnip & Carrots Animal Bunch will also be selling frozen candy bars to benefit the Lending Library.

Traditional sack races will be held between 11 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Three-legged races, potato sack races, a wheel barrow race and an "all-out race" around the diamonds will be held for both children and adults. The races are officiated by the Optimist Joie Club of Monroe who will be providing ribbons for first, second and third place finishers.

At 12:45, the flag will be raised and the Star-Spangled Banner will be sung by Monroe grads Kara Cover and Paul Jutte, followed by "Take Me Out To the Ball Game."

The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Former Mayor Elbert Tannreuther will be the umpire for the game.

The City of Monroe will also be presenting a movie in the park. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy The Sandlot (rated G) at dusk.
