A Parent's Role for Success in School

by Sandy Kalisewicz, Monroe Elementary

It is team time!   Time for the most important team, the educational team with the goal of making your child's school year outstandingly successful. Just as a sports team, make sure your child comes to school with the supplies, equipment needed and the attitude of a winner.

To make sure your child gets off to a good start:

Hornet Cheerleaders Bring Home Trophies From Ashland

Monroe's cheer squads attended cheer camp at Ashland University in late July, and brought home a large quantity of trophies, ribbons and honors.

The varsity squad was selected "Camp Champs," winning first place in both the cheer and dance categories. Natalie Combs, Taylor Jones, Taylor Moore, Autumn Turner and Rachel Williams also qualified for the "All American Cheerleader" competition.

The junior varsity squad received a 2nd place in cheer, and the freshman and junior high squads each won first in dance.

JV, freshman and junior high qualifiers for "All American Cheerleader" were: junior Jessica Slezak; sophomore Karli Guido; freshman Abbie Fierman; and 8th graders Raeven Davis and Malea Shinno.

8th Grade Poetry

The following are poems submitted by Mrs. Burchfield's class.

Reality Check

by Elizabeth A. Miller

They walk the streets alone
With no body and no home
They call out to us for some help
But we’re too wrapped up in ourselves
To bother to listen.
We turn away
We don’t even notice
How the world has changed

Our children are starving
The air is unclean
But for many of us
These events go unseen

Scared and alone
Children are crying
Uncared for and polluted
Our Earth is now dying

Families are fighting
Where do teenagers go?
Some abused and neglected
Or left out in the snow

Our animals, too
They’re abandoned and cold
With no one to love them
Or a place to call home

Reality check —
What are we gonna do?
About the issues we face
’Cause they could happen to you, too
