Historical Society Annual Dinner

The Monroe Historical Society held its annual dinner and program on December 13, 2009 at the Mt Pleasant Activity Building. A wonderful dinner was catered by Grecian Delight and Mr. Jim Price presented a very informative program on the history of the 1910 Museum building located at the corner of Main & Elm St. 

Susan Bake of West Chester was announced as the winner of the quilt raffle. She is the daughter of Clarence & Tillie Adams of Monroe. A general meeting was also held that included the election of officers to the Board of Directors. The following members were elected:

The Monroe Historical Society will meet on Sunday, December 13 at 1:00 p m in the Activity Building at Mt. Pleasent Retirement Village. This will be the annual Christmas dinner catered by Grecian Delight.
Cost of the dinner is $12.00. Reservations can be made by calling Jane Majors, 539-7109 or Norman Hayes, 423-6363 no later than December 6. Guests are welcome.
Following dinner Mr. Jim Price will present the program "History of the 1910 Building."
Tickets are still being sold for the quilt raffle. Tickets cost $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. Drawing for the Alabama Star will be December 13. Tickets can be purchased by calling Jane Majors, 539-7109.

Apple Butter!

What could be better on a crisp fall day than the smell of sweet cider in the air?
 
Join the Monroe Historical Society on Friday, October 23rd from 4pm - 6pm at 10 E. Elm St in the rear of the Chickahominy House Museum for the peeling and coring of the apples. Bring your own peeler!
 
We need you again Saturday, October 24 from 8am - 4pm at the log cabin in the Community Park on S. Main St. for the cooking, stirring and canning of the jars.
 
Bring the kids and some games for them to play as the adults tell "Tall Tales" of Monroe. This will be a perfect opportunity to stop by and meet the nice folks who make up the Monroe Historical Society. We will be happy to pass you the giant spoon for a turn at stirring! Refreshments will be served.

The Monroe Historical Society will meet Thursday, October 29 in the Activity Building at Mt. Pleasant Retirement Village. President Norman Hayes will preside over the business meeting beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Mr. Scott Fowler will present the program, Mr. Fowler' topic will be the History of Lesourdsville Lake.
The Monroe Historical Society would like to extend an invitation to anyone that is interested in the history of Monroe. Come and share any memories that you might have about Lesourdsville Lake.

The Monroe Historical Society is sponsoring a day of old-fashioned baseball, fun and activities for all ages. The 1869 Red Stockings, based in Cincinnati, will be playing a Monroe team coached by Councilman Tracy Shell. The game will be played using 1869 rules (baseball rules have evolved a quite a bit over time). Period uniforms have been provided for the Golden Lads by Mark Bursley of the Red Onion Cafe.

The festivities begin at 11:00 a.m. The log cabin will be open for visitors, and the Red Onion will be serving baseball fare (popcorn, peanuts, pulled pork sandwiches, hotdogs, brats and salt-water taffy). Catnip & Carrots Animal Bunch will also be selling frozen candy bars to benefit the Lending Library.

Historical Society Quilt Raffle

The Historical Society will be selling raffle tickets for this handmade king sized Alabama Star quilt. Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00 and are available from members, at the log cabin on August 8, and online at www.monroeoh-historicalsociety.org. The drawing will take place at the December meeting.

The Monroe Historical Society will meet on Thursday, July 30 at 6:00 pm. in the Activity Building at Mt. Pleasant Retirement Village. This will be a carry-in-dinner. Meat, beverage and rolls will be provided. Members and guest are asked to bring a vegetable, salad or dessert to share and your own table service. Business meeting will follow dinner. The program, following the meeting will be presented by Mr. Gary Kersey. Mr. Kersey's topic will be" Lincoln visits General Hooker's Army." Guests are welcome. Players Needed for Ye Olde Time Baseball Game

The Red Stockings Baseball Team (of 1869) will be coming to Monroe to take on the Monroe's Golden Lads as part of Log Cabin Days in the Park on August 8 at 1:00.

Vintage Baseball Game

The Monroe Historical Society will be sponsoring a day of vintage baseball on August 9 at the Community Park. Festivities will begin at 11 a.m.
Mark Bursley of the Red Onion will be providing the “normal ballgame fare” with brats, hot dogs, taffy, popcorn, peanuts, etc. Monroe grads Kara Cover and Paul Jutte will be singing The Star Spangled Banner and Take Me Out to the Ball Game.
The game will begin at 1 p.m. between the 1869 Cincinnati Redstockings (www.1869reds.com) and a local Monroe team. Former Mayor Elbert Tannreuther will be umpiring the game and Councilman Tracy Shell will be the coaching the Monroe team.
The log cabin will be open and games from the 1860s/70s will be available for all ages. A movie is also planned at dusk.
Call Tracy Shell at 513-600-0366 if you wish to volunteer to play some ball the “old-fashioned” way, or you can call Gene Williams at 539-9581, to volunteer and participate in some fashion, for a Saturday of fun.

The Monroe Historical Society has announced they will host a book signing for Monroe resident turned author, Marcia McCartt on Sunday, March 8 from 2:00-4:00pm at the Historical Society located at 10 East Elm Street in Monroe The 128-page book traces the history of Monroe from 1850 with over 200 black-and-white photos with a historical narrative

Mrs. McCartt’s passion for history and genealogy combined with an interest in the community encouraged her to write her first book She began with an interest in writing about the tornado that destroyed much of Monroe From that, her interest began to develop in exploring much earlier events of this 192 year-old community In addition to the 1969 tornado, the book features information about Nathaniel Sackett, the city’s founder, the Monroe churches and schools, the many community events celebrated by the residents, and successful individuals coming from the community
