The Monroe Area Community Improvement Corporation (CIC)recently awarded more than $30,000 in grant funds to local businesses through its Business Exterior Improvement Matching Grant and Downtown Development Grant Programs. The CIC’s Board of Trustees awarded five Business Exterior Matching Grants for a total of $10,820. Because this program requires at least 50% of the project cost to come from the company, the $10,820 in grant funds is leveraging an additional $10,820 in private contributions. Award recipients include Richter Landscaping ($360 for a new ground sign), Monroe Collision Center ($1,540 for landscaping improvements), Fixture Dimensions Incorporated ($2,050 for a new sign), Floorcraft Floor Coverings ($3,170 for a new sign), and Stratson Group/Greentree Plaza ($3,700 for landscaping improvements).
The City of Monroe has been working on a major update of the City’s Comprehensive Plan. Over the last year, a committee made up of residents, business owners, township and school representatives, developers, and council members have been meeting to discuss future infrastructure needs and zoning requirements.
A citizen survey was done to determine what Monroe’s residents like and dislike about the city, and what improvements they would like to see. Poggemeyer Design Group has been working with the committee to incorporate these ideas into the city’s master plan.
In addition to population projections, the plan looks at needs for parks, roads, and development growth.
Monroe - Veronica Sterling has been named Administrator for Mount Pleasant Retirement Village, located at 225 Britton Lane. She began this leadership position Jan. 5. Mount Pleasant is one of 11 retirement communities owned and operated by Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Services (OPRS).
"We welcome Veronica in this important leadership role - she is a wonderful addition to the Mount Pleasant family," said Mount Pleasant Executive Director Stan Kappers. "Veronica is a talented, enthusiastic leader with a proven record of strong clinical and financial performance in the communities in which she has previously served."
Sterling comes to Mount Pleasant from Cottingham Retirement Community in Sharonville, and prior to this, the Legacy Court at Evergreen Retirement Community -- part of the Wellspring Health Center in northern Cincinnati.
Anytime Fitness is pleased to announce it has signed a lease for space in the Heritage Plaza Shopping Center. Working with the Cincinnati-based firm of Midland Atlantic, Anytime Fitness will develop a 4,200 sq. ft. exercise facility.
At its meeting on January 8th, Council appointed new members to the various Boards and Commissions. There were a great number of applications for these boards, and Council was pleased to see so many willing to serve their community. Many thanks to those who volunteer their time to make our City a better place to live. Terms expire on December 31 of the year indicated in parenthesis.

Construction began this week on the widening of State Route 63 east of the I-75 Interchange. The project is the long awaited widening of the road between Senate Drive and Monroe's eastern corporation line. The improvements will move Corridor Park Drive to the west to align it with Senate Drive. A traffic signal will be installed at this new intersection. The new road to the south will be the main access to the planned Cincinnati Premium Outlets, expected to be open in late 2008.
The road improvements will also include a dedicated left turn lane for Traders World, whose access drive is being moved to the east 250 feet. This access drive will align directly across from a proposed road that will eventually connect to Butler Warren Road and someday possibly tie into Cox Road. Once the new road to the south is constructed, a traffic signal will be placed at this intersection also.
