Saturday, May 22, the Monroe Golden Lads will be playing a DOUBLE HEADER rematch of last years olde tyme baseball game against the Cincinnati Red Stockings!

Game times are 1:00pm & 3:00pm and held at the Monroe Community Park, 500 S. Main Street in Monroe. They will be playing on the grass field adjacent to diamond #6. This is a free event and fun for all ages! Bring your lawn chairs, your blankets, a picnic lunch and enjoy baseball in its original form.

Vintage Base Ball is base ball (yes, it was spelled two words prior to the 1880s) played by the rules and customs of the 19th Century. The players (sometimes called ballists) wear period reproduction uniforms, either with long trouser and shield shirt, or a later style lace shirt and knickers. They recreate the game based on rules and research of the various decades of the mid-to-late nineteenth century. The playing of vintage base ball can be seen at open-air museums, tournament re-enactments and city parks. It is played on both open grass fields and modern baseball diamonds. Spectators may consider vintage base ball to be a new sport, however, some clubs have been in existence since the 1980s. Vintage base ball is a reflection of how baseball existed at an earlier time.

The Monroe Historical Society will be presenting a very special Civil War display from April 22 - April 25, 2010 at the Museum located at 10 E. Elm Street, downtown Monroe. Hours for this special event will be 10am – 3pm Thursday through Saturday and 1pm – 4pm Sunday.
Highlighting our presentation is a collection of letters from cavalry soldier Robert Burr of Cleves, Ohio (Hamilton County) to his sister Mattie Vance of nearby Bethany, Ohio (Butler County). The genealogy of the family begins with the legendary Aaron Burr and includes several Monroe families. These fascinating firsthand accounts of Civil War life, including the Battle of Shiloh, Murfreesboro and the taking of Savannah and ride to the sea, span the entire length of the war from 1861-1865. This is an unprecedented collection and a real treasure for Monroe:

The Monroe Historical Society held its annual dinner and program on December 13, 2009 at the Mt Pleasant Activity Building. A wonderful dinner was catered by Grecian Delight and Mr. Jim Price presented a very informative program on the history of the 1910 Museum building located at the corner of Main & Elm St. 

Susan Bake of West Chester was announced as the winner of the quilt raffle. She is the daughter of Clarence & Tillie Adams of Monroe. A general meeting was also held that included the election of officers to the Board of Directors. The following members were elected:

The Monroe Historical Society will meet on Sunday, December 13 at 1:00 p m in the Activity Building at Mt. Pleasent Retirement Village. This will be the annual Christmas dinner catered by Grecian Delight.

Join the Monroe Historical Society on Friday, October 23rd from 4pm - 6pm at 10 E. Elm St in the rear of the Chickahominy House Museum for the peeling and coring of the apples. Bring your own peeler!
 
We need you again Saturday, October 24 from 8am - 4pm at the log cabin in the Community Park on S. Main St. for the cooking, stirring and canning of the jars.
 
Bring the kids and some games for them to play as the adults tell "Tall Tales" of Monroe. This will be a perfect opportunity to stop by and meet the nice folks who make up the Monroe Historical Society. We will be happy to pass you the giant spoon for a turn at stirring! Refreshments will be served.

The Monroe Historical Society will meet Thursday, October 29 in the Activity Building at Mt. Pleasant Retirement Village. President Norman Hayes will preside over the business meeting beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Mr. Scott Fowler will present the program, Mr. Fowler' topic will be the History of Lesourdsville Lake.
The Monroe Historical Society would like to extend an invitation to anyone that is interested in the history of Monroe. Come and share any memories that you might have about Lesourdsville Lake.

The Monroe Historical Society will meet on Thursday, July 30 at 6:00 pm. in the Activity Building at Mt. Pleasant Retirement Village. This will be a carry-in-dinner. Meat, beverage and rolls will be provided. Members and guest are asked to bring a vegetable, salad or dessert to share and your own table service. Business meeting will follow dinner. The program, following the meeting will be presented by Mr. Gary Kersey. Mr. Kersey's topic will be" Lincoln visits General Hooker's Army." Guests are welcome. The Red Stockings Baseball Team (of 1869) will be coming to Monroe to take on the Monroe's Golden Lads as part of Log Cabin Days in the Park on August 8 at 1:00.
