Katie Howell, a fourth grade student at Monroe Elementary School, won first place for the third/fourth grade level in the 2010 Riverbank Poetry Student Competition. Katie's poem entitled Colors of the World, was chosen out of hundreds of poems submitted for this this year's competition. The Riverbank Poetry Student Competition is open to all Butler County students in grade 3-12. A formal reception was held on April 30th at the Miami University campus in Hamilton. At the reception, students read their award winning poems and received their trophies from John Kraimer, the director and poet laureate of the Riverbank Poetry Project.
Mommy and Me Make Music will begin it's summer session in June. Classes are offered for children ages 4 months to 4 years old. All classes have a theme that is age-appropriate and educational. Parents and children interact while playing a variety of instruments, doing finger play songs and circle dances. Props, such as scarves, parachute, and beanbags, are also used. All activities are designed to encourage the development of social, cognitive, physical, and language skills. This is a great opportunity to interact with your child in a loving and educational environment. Sessions average $9 per class and will be held on Monday mornings at Monroe Presbyterian Church.

The President’s Award honors a Monroe High School graduating senior(s) who has shown outstanding character and leadership while attending school. The student(s) has effectively used his or her time and skills to benefit the community and school. A scholarship in the amount of $500 will be awarded to assist with future educational expenses, and an honorary plaque will be displayed in the main street lobby of the high school. To be eligible, a nominee must meet the following criteria: • MLS district Senior who attends Monroe High school, Greentree Academy, or Butler Tech • Minimum GPA of 2.75 • Desire to continue education after high school.
Effective for the 2010-2011 school year, a child must be 5 years of age on or before August 1 to be eligible to enroll in kindergarten. Kindergarten registration packets for the 2010-11 school year are available for pick-up between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. at the Monroe Primary Office. Students DO NOT need to come with parents at this time. When you pick up your packet you will be given an appointment to register on one of the following dates: April 13 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. or April 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The April appointment is for the parents/guardians to bring in all required documents and for the incoming kindergarten students to have a short meeting with a kindergarten teacher. The National Junior Honor Society is the oldest middle school academic society in the United States. Monroe Junior High School started its chapter in 2003. On March 11, 2010, Monroe inducted 34 young men and women into its chapter. We congratulate them and their families. State testing will take place at Monroe Elementary in April. The following are the dates for specific grade levels: 3rd Grade: Reading - April 20; Math - April 22 4th Grade: Reading - April 20; Math - April 22 5th Grade: Reading: April 19; Math - April 21; Science - April 23 6th Grade: Reading April 19; Math - April 21st Test Taking Tips • Sleep – Get a good night’s sleep • Breakfast – Eat a good protein breakfast. • Relax – It is too late to worry about testing, now relax and SHOW what you have LEARNED throughout the YEAR! If you get nervous, take a few deep breaths slowly to relax yourself • On Time – Make sure that you are to school on time. This could cause some additional anxiety.
Monroe Primary School and the Monroe Police Department are working together to make sure children in the district are better protected. On Friday, March 19, 2010, Assistant Principal Nancy Stratton and School Resource Officer Brett Kahny passed out ID kits to all kindergarten children. The kits were made available through The National Child Identification Program.
Monroe Elementary School held their annual Spelling Bee March 8. Contestants were the top 5 spellers in Grades 5 and 6. Jake Begley was the top speller for Grade 5 and the Spelling Bee Champion. Jennifer Horvat was the top speller for Grade 6.
